WHY:
It´s time to rethink design. To create long time value instead of short time profit. To build the future on generosity instead of greed. We need optimism, new spirit and change! We need Design for Life.

Design for Life is all about how we can create better lives for the many. How we plan, produce, deliver and consume everything from cities, transportation and infrastructure to food, entertainment, products and brands. Together we have a joint responsibility. We can all make a difference

Design is always about humans – about satisfying needs, solving problems and attracting us towards new experiences. This implies that great design often is founded on a social and cultural perspective. Unfortunately design has partly turned into a major source of pollution. Just look at everything modish and the hunt for newness. I big part of the industry are focusing on more when we actually need better.

Design for Life is about care and cooperation. It´s about taking steps forward regardless of length. Doing anything is always better than nothing.

Our goal is that DesignBoost 2009 will be characterised by new insights, new thoughts, new friends and preferably laughter, or as we put it; right, ah, haha!

PARTNERS:

DesignBoost 2009 – ´Design for Life´ is a junction for curious minds, commercial and industrial life, organisations and institutions. Our BoostPartners 2009 include: Electrolux, IKEA, Audi, Iittala, Arena, Skanska, Thule, E.ON, Swedish EU presidency, City of Malmö and Region Skåne.

Why ‘Design for Life’?

September 2, 2009

As we have mentioned before the theme for DesignBoost 2009, which will take place October 14-16 in Malmö Sweden, is ‘Design for Life’. We have tried to briefly describe our vision of the theme in the text below. The idea is, of course, to further develop the idea of ‘Design for Life’ at the event in October. What is your idea of the theme? Please write a comment below and let us know.

Design for Life – DesignBoost 2009, October 14–16.

——————————

BACKGROUND / WHY

DesignBoost 2009 is all about how we design the way we live. How we plan, produce, deliver and consume everything from cities, transportation and infrastructure to food, entertainment, products and brands.

Design is always about humans – about satisfying needs, solving problems and attracting us towards new experiences. This implies that great design often is founded on a social and cultural perspective. Unfortunately design has partly turned into a major source of pollution. Just look at everything modish and the hunt for newness in combination with a general lack of quality and blase design development that too often just seem to focus on magazine coverage. Is it surprising that people are getting tired of design and wonder what it is really all about?

The question is, how can we make design sustainable? How can we make it economically, ecologically and socially justifiable? There is a need for a new holistic viewpoint. We all have a joint responsibility to make a difference. As private individuals, companies and organizations as well as cities, regions and countries.

OBJECTIVES

-To reflect the principle that design is multidisciplinary reaching way beyond the obvious.

-To make everybody question, reach awareness and think in new paths when it comes to creating better lives for lots of people.

-To improve cooperation among companies, institutions and organisations and practitioners of design in its broadest context.

-To provide for better and more culturally connected design solutions.

-To find new ways for creating long time value instead of short term profit.

-To improve diversity, justice and integration.

THEME

Design for Life

KEY WORDS

humanism, responsibility, generosity, change

HOW

To get a holistic view on Design for Life the Sustainable Wheel and its seven spokes are used as a pedagogic resource:

Design for Life is environmental friendly

About the importance of affecting the environment as little as possible.

Design for Life is aestethic

About the importance of to age with grace.

Design for Life is authentic

About the importance of telling credible stories.

Design for Life is innovative

About the importance of developing unique attributes on several levels.

Design for Life is affective

About the importance of being part of the user.

Design for Life is multi quality

About the importance of owning multi-quality capacities.

Design for Life is compatible

About the importance of being part of a bigger coherence.

WHAT

Design for Life will be debated in thirtysix BoostChat (workshops), explained in twenty BoostTalk (lectures) and visualized in one BoostShow (exhibition).

The BoostShow will present different best practice concepts based on the holistic viewpoint of the Sustainable Wheel; Design for Life, Serving the Future, The Spirit of Play, Active Lifestyle, My life – My city, Sustainable Mobility, Building for Better Life.

MiniBoost Milan online

June 4, 2009

CAN YOU IMAGINE THE CITY SKYLINE OF TOMORROW?

Listen to what Ilse, Tom, Konstantin, Arik, Ross, Katrin and Satyendra have to say about it.

The Knowledge company Designboost is interested to explore the personal viewpoint of sustainable cities of some of the worlds most acknowledged designers. To find out Designboost went to Milan Design Week and made a MiniBoost. The MiniBoost resulted in thirteen unique interviews. The seven first interviews are released today and include personalities like Ilse Crawford, Tom Dixon, Konstantin Grcic, Arik Levy, Ross Lovegrove, Katrin Olina and Satyendra Pakhale. You will find the interviews by following this link:

The questions asked look at sustainable cities from a holistic point of view and touch among other subjects sustainability according to cultural life, emotional amplification and the personal stories of the inhabitants. The questions are written by different Boosters at the DesignBoost 2008 key event “Long Live the City” in Malmö, Sweden. One may say that the MiniBoost is like a relay race with questions as batons passed on to new Boosters.

Next week Designboost will release six more interviews from the Milan Design Week MiniBoost including Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Kristina Dryza, Richard Hutten, James Irvine, Tim Power and Patricia Urquiola. Stay tuned!

Designboost selected by Swedish Government

May 28, 2009

Designboost has been selected by Swedish Government to represent Sweden during the Swedish EU presidency 2009. Designboost has been chosen because of its focus on holistic sustainability were diversity and integration is crucial and support the overall view of Sweden.

During the Swedish EU presidency Designboost will produce a series of activities including the key event DesignBoost 2009 “Design for Life” which will take place October 14–16.

DesignBoost 2009 will focus on “Design for Life”.

May 15, 2009

The theme for the first Designboost key event, DesignBoost 2007, was “sustainable design”. Year two, DesignBoost 2008, focused on sustainable cities with the theme “Long live the city”. This year we will go deeper and look into sustainable life with a theme called “Design for Life”.

October 14-16 Designboost presents DesignBoost 2009 “Design for Life” in Malmö through a variety of integrated BoostChat (workshops), BoostTalk (lectures) and a BoostShow (exhibition). We will invite Boosters from all over the world which represent the true frontline within design in its broadest context. All are authorities in their field of expertise and our selection reflects the principle that design is multidisciplinary reaching way beyond the obvious. Our carefully selected Boosters will interact over three days with companies, organisations and institutions.

BoostTalk and BoostShow is open for public as well.

When it comes to sustainable life there are probably many things that needs to be questioned, left could very well be right. The objective of DesignBoost 2009 is to make everybody question, reach awareness and think in new paths when it comes to creating better lives for lots of people. This is after all the ultimate goal for all design.

MiniBoost in Stockholm online

May 15, 2009

The first Miniboost for this year took place at the Stockholm Furniture Fair/Stockholm Design Week. We met up with twelve acknowledged personalities from the design industry; Alfredo Häberli,  Ineke Hans, Inga Sempe, Michael Young, Monica Förster, Claesson Koivisto Rune (Mårten Claesson, Eero Koivisto and Ola Rune), Michael Sodeau, Ilkka Suppanen and Apocalypse (Petra Lilja and Jenny Nordberg). We asked them the same ten questions which originate from Designboost 2008 “Long Live the City” in Malmö around the theme of sustainable cities. The questions are written by different boosters like Jennifer Leonard, Sante Poromaa and Kristina Dryza. This series of MiniBoost BoostCasts can be seen as a relay race with questions as batons passed on to new boosters.

Iittala at Designboost

May 15, 2009

We asked seven creative designers/design groups if they were interested to do a personal interpretation of compatibility based on products from the Iittala portfolio. We asked them to be open-minded and see compatibility as to be part of a bigger coherence; connect history/present/future, connect brands, common platforms and human releationship. The designers/design groups are Ilse Crawford, Satyendra Pakhale, Stephen Burks, Folkform, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Ilkka Suppanen and Apocalypse.

We made a catalogue as a documentation of the installations. You can flip it through here.

Designboost at Facebook

May 15, 2009

Now you can find Designboost at Facebook as well. The group is open for all and everyone. Please join and start to share knowledge about design in general and sustainable design in particular.
